Characteristics of Diagnosis and Treatment

Pediatric Neurological examination program

1. Electroencephalogram (EEG): The department has advanced EEG equipment and can conduct normal EEG, 24-hour dynamic EEG, long range video EEG. Etc. The annual inspection volume is more than 4000 person-times.

2. Electromyography (EMG) and Evoked Potentials: Electromyography (EMG) and Evoked Potentials are helpful for neural localization and qualitative diagnosis. Evoked potential detection includes Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP), Visual Evoked Potential (VEP), and Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SEP), etc. Over the years, the department has accumulated rich experience, with an annual inspection volume of more than 1200 person-times.

3. polysomnography (PSG) and Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT): The department has advanced sleep monitor equipment, and is the only unit in northeast China to carry out sleep monitoring for children, with an annual inspection volume of more than 200 person-times

4. Transcranial Doppler, (TCD): According to the changes of pediatric neurological disease spectrum, the department has constantly updated equipment and examination techniques, with an annual examination volume of more than 3000 person-times.

Preoperative evaluation of refractory epilepsy in children

Epilepsy may progressively impair cognitive function and executive function, affect daily life and cause serious harm. About 20% to 30% of children with epilepsy are not sensitive to existing antiepileptic drugs and become drug-resistant epilepsy, and about half of them require preoperative evaluation for surgical treatment. The Department of Pediatric Neurology of The First Hospital of Jilin University is one of the leading departments that have formed the first national advanced comprehensive epilepsy center in Northeast China. The expert team of the department has accumulated rich experience in preoperative evaluation of epilepsy, and has successfully carried out preoperative evaluation for many children, and achieved good efficacy through surgical treatment, which is deeply trusted by peers and patients.

Diagnosis, treatment and research of rare pediatric diseases

There are about 7,000 kinds of rare diseases, and more than 30 kinds are added every year. About 30% of patients with rare diseases have been diagnosed by 5-10 doctors, and the diagnosis cycle is as long as 5-30 years. The misdiagnosis rate is as high as 44%, and the standard treatment rate is only 25%. Diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases in children are particularly difficult. About 60% of rare diseases develop in childhood, of which about 60% involve the nervous system, and about 30% of children survive less than 5 years old. In 2019, the department led the establishment of the Pediatric Rare Diseases Group of Jilin Provincial Doctors Association. In 2020, the department led the establishment of MDT cooperation Group for pediatric rare Diseases in the First Hospital of Jilin University, which actively provides one-stop professional and comprehensive consultation evaluation for children. In the clinical research of rare diseases in children, the department actively participates in the research of ga-1 AAV9-GCDH gene transduction therapy jointly developed by Professor Du Hongwei of The First Hospital of Jilin University and Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 18 national cases of ga-1 children have been enrolled in the department, the world's first clinical trial of aAV9-GCDH gene administration in GA-1 children has been completed, and the efficacy is worthy of expecting.
