The department of gastrointestinal surgery of The First Hospital of Jilin University is the largest specialized gastrointestinal disease diagnosis and treatment center in Jilin Province. It is the National Key Clinical Specialty Construction Discipline of the Ministry of Health, the Laparoscopy Training Base of the Medical and Health Science and Technology Development Research Center of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the Jilin International Joint Research Center for Gastrointestinal Diseases, the Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of Gastrointestinal Tumor Bioinformatics, the American Society of Endoscopic Surgeons Strategic Cooperation Promotion Base, the Greater China Academy of Colorectal Endoscopic Surgery Training Base, the China Anti-Cancer Association Gastric Cancer Demonstration Base, the Colorectal Cancer Demonstration Base of China Anti-Cancer Association, the Chinese Medical Doctor Association Laparoscopy Training Base, etc. The technical level of the department has reached the international standard, and the number of operations ranks the top in the country.

The department currently has 155 beds, featuring radical surgery for gastrointestinal tumors and laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery, with an annual outpatient number of 30,000 and more than 7,000 inpatients, over 5,000 operations will be performed annually. The operations include laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery, which is accounted for more than 70% of the total operations.

In the field of scientific research, the department has undertaken more than 100 projects such as the general projects and youth fund projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the national 11th Five-Year Plan science and technology supporting projects, special projects from the Medical and Health Science and Technology Development Research Center of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, and the Jilin Provincial scientific research projects, the total scientific research fund is over 10 million yuan. The department has been granted several first and second prizes of the Scientific and Technological Trogress Award of Jilin Province, Medical Achievement Award of Jilin University, etc. In recent years, more than 1,000 papers have been published, and hundreds of them have been included in SCI papers.

The department of gastrointestinal surgery has been developed into a regional discipline center integrating medical treatment, scientific research and teaching.
