The PICU cares for infants, children and teenagers up to age 18 who need intensive care after surgery or injured or who have a broad range of other critically ill conditions, such as the following: severe infections, fulminant myocarditis, acute kidney or liver failure, breathing or lung problems, severe encephalitis, intoxication, shock etc. The department attaches great attention to the multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment and the individualized treatment model for patients underwent pediatric liver transplantation, compound trauma, congenital heart disease, and so on.
The department is the only unit in China that fully participates in the perioperative management of children’s liver transplantation, the only unit in Jilin Province that develops children’s ECMO technology and also the largest children’s blood purification treatment unit in Jilin Province. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), continuous blood purification (CBP), perioperative management in pediatric liver transplantation and intensive rehabilitation are all available and in the leading position in China, which has filled a number of technical gaps in this field in Jilin Province.
There are a variety of advanced equipment available for organ function monitoring, supporting and treatment, including 4 ECMO equipment, 11 CRRT machines, 3 blood perfusion machine, 24 invasive ventilators, 5 transport ventilators, 16 non-invasive ventilators, 1 bronchoscopy system and so on. It guarantees the rescue, diagnosis and treatment of critically ill children to the greatest extent. In recent years, through the overcoming of core technologies and the improvement of refined management, the department has reduced the mortality rate of fulminant myocarditis to less than 5%, which is at the leading level in China. The PICU has reached the first-class level in China and has become the core strength of regional treatment.
