Founded in 1960, The First Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery is formerly known as the General Surgery Department, which belongs to The First Hospital of Bethune Medical University with a glorious tradition. Now it is a national key clinical specialty, key discipline of Jilin University, excellent discipline of The First Hospital of Jilin University, authorized discipline to offer master and doctoral degree, and a mobile station for the post-doctors. It is also the first Endoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment Technology Training Base of Health Commission of Jilin Province, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Jilin University, Laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery disease diagnosis and treatment center of Jilin University, Jilin Provincial Laparoscopic Surgery Center, Hepatobiliary surgery ERAS standard ward, Civilized Department in 2017-2018 and Civilized Department in 2019-2020, which is widely considered as a highly specialized large-scale hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery teaching and research center in China.
The total number of outpatient (emergency) consultations throughout the year is more than 26,000. There are 98 beds, 7,000 patients are treated and 6,000 operations are performed annually. The number of surgeries has ranked first in the surgical system of The First Hospital of Jilin University for seven consecutive years. There are several specially set treatment groups within the department, including: Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Tumors Minimally Invasive Therapy Group, ERCP Group, Severe Pancreatitis Group, Ultrasound Intervention Group, Abdominal Hernia Group and Bariatric Metabolic Disease Therapeutics Group, etc.
