The Department of Infectious Diseases of The First Hospital of Jilin University was established in 1949, the same time when The First Hospital of Jilin University was built. Since the establishment of the department, after generations of continuous efforts, great achievements have been made in the management of patients with various infectious diseases, the scientific research and teaching of infectious diseases .

In the 21st century, the department has achieved greater accomplishment. In 2008, the reorganized department of infectious diseases was established and the key emphasis in work has been shifted from infectious diseases to communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases scientific research. The department was rated as a national key clinical specialty of infectious diseases by the National Health and Family Planning Commission in 2013 based on the high-level platform of The First Hospital of Jilin University. The reorganized department has shown stronger combat effectiveness and cohesion in every major public health emergency in Jilin Province.

In the spring of 2003, the department diagnosed the first patient with SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) in Jilin Province and treated the first batch of SARS patients. In 2008, the department began to undertake the critical rescue mission of hand-foot-mouth disease in Jilin Province. From 2009 to 2010, the department undertook the rescue mission of 2009 H1N1 influenza and severe pneumonia patients. On February 19^th, 2014, the department treated the first patient infected with H7N9 avian influenza in Jilin Province, the patient was eventually cured and discharged. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the department has been designated as a COVID -19 treatment unit of Jilin Province, and a  serving treatment base for confirmed severe patients.

In the Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics of China’s Hospitals (infectious diseases), it was ranked 5^th in 2013 and 2014, 4^th in 2015, 9^th in 2016, 11^th in 2017 and 2018, and 16^th in 2019; In the 2019 Hospital Disciplines Ranking (infectious diseases), it was ranked first in both Jilin Province and Northeast China. From 2017 to 2020, the department was respectively ranked 16^th, 15^th, 15^th, and 16^th in China Hospital Ranking, Fudan University Edition and was continuously ranked 1st in Jilin Province and Northeast China.

The physicians and microbiologists from the Department of Infectious Diseases have worked with staffs from Hospital Clinical Laboratory, Infection Control Department and Pharmacy Department, and jointly undertaken the monitoring of bacterial resistance, the rational use of antibiotics, clinical anti-infection, and consultation of the application of antibiotics in the whole hospital.
