Institutional Overview
Established in 1960, the Department of Ophthalmology at The First Hospital of Jilin University has emerged as a leading academic and clinical hub in Northeast China. As a flagship department within a Grade-A Tertiary Hospital, we integrate cutting-edge clinical care, translational research, and advanced medical education. Our team comprises 21 senior faculty members, including 8 professors, 13 associate professors, and a mentorship network of 1 doctoral supervisor and 10 master’s supervisors. With 53 dedicated inpatient beds and over 5,000 annual admissions, we serve as a regional referral center for complex ophthalmic conditions.
Clinical Expertise & Subspecialty Divisions
Our department delivers comprehensive, multidisciplinary care across variety subspecialty domains:
1. Retina & Vitreous Disorders:
· Retinal Vascular Diseases: Advanced management of diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, and pediatric retinal pathologies, including retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening and laser/pharmacologic therapy.
· Complex Vitreoretinal Surgery: Expertise in retinal detachment repair, macular hole surgery, and combined keratoplasty with vitrectomy for severe ocular trauma or dual anterior/posterior segment pathologies.
2. Corneal & Ocular Surface Diseases:
· Corneal Transplantation: Regional leader in full-spectrum keratoplasty, including: Penetrating Keratoplasty (PKP) ;Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK);Endothelial Keratoplasty: DSAEK (Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty) and DMEK (Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) .
· As a national referral center for complex ocular surface pathologies, we provide precision diagnosis and advanced therapies. Operate the Jilin Red Cross Eye Bank—the province’s sole corneal tissue procurement and distribution center—performing 300+ transplants annually.
3. Cataract & Refractive Surgery:
· Phacoemulsification with premium intraocular lens (IOL) implantation (monofocal, multifocal, toric)
· Management of comorbid conditions (e.g., cataract-glaucoma combined surgery, post-keratoplasty cataract extraction)
· Refractive Correction: Advanced techniques including LASIK, SMILE, and ICL implantation for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.
4. Strabismus & Amblyopia:
· Adjustable suture techniques for horizontal/vertical strabismus
· Minimally invasive procedures for complex paralytic strabismus
· Amblyopia management via patching, pharmacological penalization, and vision therapy.
5. Oculoplastic & Reconstructive Surgery:
· Eyelid Reconstruction: Ptosis repair, Entropion/Ectropion correction , Post-traumatic eyelid reconstruction .
· Aesthetic & Functional Repair: Management of dermatochalasis, orbital fat prolapse, and lacrimal gland prolapse.
6. Orbital & Lacrimal Diseases:
· Surgical management of thyroid-associated orbitopathy, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, and orbital tumors.
7. Glaucoma & Neuro-Ophthalmology:
· Multimodal therapy for refractory glaucoma (e.g., micro-invasive glaucoma surgery [MIGS], trabeculectomy, aqueous shunt implantation) and optic nerve disorders.
Research & Innovation
As the Ophthalmology Clinical Medicine Experimental Observation Base of Jilin Province, our department drives translational research with:
· 4 National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC) grants as principal investigators; participation in 4 additional NSFC collaborations.
· 30+ provincial/ministerial research initiatives addressing ocular surface regeneration, corneal biomechanics, and retinal vascular pathologies.
· 200+ peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals; recipient of 10+ provincial/municipal Science & Technology Progress Awards.
Education & Leadership
· Accredited training center for ophthalmology residents and fellows, offering subspecialty rotations in corneal surgery, vitreoretinal diseases, pediatric ophthalmology, and oculoplastics.
· National recognition: Designated Member Unit of the National Corneal Transplant Quality Control Alliance, reflecting adherence to stringent surgical standards.
Global Collaboration
· Clinical & Research Fellowships: Faculty members have completed clinical observerships and research fellowships at leading institutions in the United States, Europe, and Japan, fostering cross-border knowledge transfer.
· Global Academic Participation: Regular contributions to international forums, including the World Cornea Congress, Asia-Pacific Vitreoretinal Society Meetings, and American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Sessions.
· Innovation Dissemination: Pioneering techniques such as the first combined keratoplasty-myopic lens extraction in China and protocols for complex keratoplasty-vitrectomy procedures have been showcased globally, cementing our role as a key contributor to ophthalmic advancements in Asia.
Rooted in six decades of expertise, we are dedicated to delivering personalized, evidence-based treatments while advancing the frontiers of vision science. Through strategic partnerships with international leaders and relentless innovation in subspecialty care, we strive to set new standards in patient outcomes and surgical precision. Our commitment extends beyond treatment: we aim to empower the next generation of ophthalmologists through rigorous training and to foster a world where preventable blindness is eradicated.
