The department has an elite team composed of senior ,middle-aged and outstanding young surgeons who have been engaged in the diagnosis, treatment and research of thyroid diseases for many years. It is one of the thyroid surgery centers which has completed the largest number of surgeries in China. Annually more than 80,000 outpatients will be received and over 4,500 operattions for thyroid, parathyroid and neck diseases will be performed. Among them, there are more than 3500 cases of thyroid cancer, and more than 600 cases of advanced thyroid cancer and thyroid re-operations.
In the past three years, the department has undertaken and completed more than 30 national, provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, received more than 6 million RMB in scientific research funds, and published more than 100 academic papers, of which more than 30 were included in SCI, and more than 20 in EI or China series magazines. The department has won the Provincial and Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award and the Jilin University Medical Achievement Award. The department hosts domestic and international conferences and various continuing medical education and training courses each year, which has played a leading role as a specialist, driving the improvement of the diagnosis and treatment level of thyroid and parathyroid diseases in Jilin province.

During the five years from 2013 to 2018, in order to meet the needs for medical specialization and internationalization, Professor Chen Guang manifests a great vision. With the strong support of Dean Li Jianxian from Yangming University in Taiwan, the Department of Thyroid Surgery has expanded its field and successfully achieved the internationalization of the specialty that has gone abroad and entered the world. It has opened a new chapter of great strides and leap-forward development of thyroid surgery.
The academic leader, Professor Chen Guang, currently served more than ten academic positions, such as Member of the International Endocrine Surgery Association, Director of the Asian Endocrine Surgery Association and Member of the Standing Committee of the Thyroid Disease Professional Committee of the Chinese Research Hospital Association. etc .
Under the leadership of Professor Chen Guang, the Thyroid Surgery Department of The First Hospital of Jilin University has successfully held many international and national conferences. There are 10 people have been elected to international and national specialist committees, and 7 young surgeons have podium presentation in important international conferences. The department has actively participated in more than 100 domestic conferences. Medical staffs from this department could be seen on the academic stage in China, Greece, Thailand, Poland, South Korea, Switzerland, the United States and other countries. Especially at the 46th World Congress of Surgery held in Bangkok in 2015, Professor Zhang Qiang, the deputy head of Thyroid SurgeryDepartment won two awards on the international stage: the Best Paper Award and the Traveling Scholar Award; In addition, 5 speeches and 20 posters from our department were selected at the 15th Asian Congress of Endocrine Surgery held in South Korea in 2016, The medical staff of the Thyroid Surgery Department of The First Hospital of Jilin University have left a strong figure and footprint in many well-known foreign universities, key laboratories and important conferences, and have also made the strongest voice on behalf of China on the international stage for many times.
